Hawaii Island police arrested two dozen motorists for suspected drunken driving Oct. 18 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than age 21.

South Hilo officers arrested nine motorists while Kona officers arrested eight and Puna offices four, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala arrested two drivers and North Kohala officers nabbed one.

So far this year, there have been 864 DUI arrests compared with 802 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 647 major accidents so far this year compared with 633 during the same period last year.

As of Sunday, 21 fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By that time in 2020, 13 people had died.
